If you need an out of state DUI evaluation after moving to Colorado, you may be trying to resolve a driver's license requirement that began in another state. The most important first step is finding out exactly what the original state or requesting agency requires before scheduling an evaluation.

Already have paperwork? Call or text Colorado Assessments with the state, requesting agency, deadline, and written requirements. We can help determine whether the evaluation requested appears to fit the services we provide.

Quick Answer

Can you complete an out of state DUI evaluation while living in Colorado? Sometimes. A Colorado provider may be able to complete an evaluation requested by another state, but the state, DMV, court, probation department, attorney, or other agency requesting the evaluation determines its own requirements and whether it will accept a particular provider or report.

Before scheduling, get the current requirements in writing whenever possible.

What Is an Out of State DUI Evaluation?

An out of state DUI evaluation generally refers to a drug, alcohol, or substance use evaluation completed in the state where you currently live for a DUI, DWI, OUI, OWI, or similar impaired-driving matter that occurred somewhere else.

A common situation looks like this: a person received a DUI or DWI in another state, later moved to Colorado, became a Colorado resident, and eventually discovered an unresolved requirement while applying for or attempting to reinstate driving privileges.

The original state may require documentation before it will update the person's driving status. Depending on the specific case, that documentation may involve a substance use evaluation, alcohol assessment, treatment records, education, monitoring, proof of completion, or another requirement.

This is why an out of state DUI evaluation should not begin with an assumption about what another state wants. It should begin with the actual written instructions.

Important: The terms DUI, DWI, OUI, OWI, DWAI, alcohol assessment, substance use evaluation, and chemical dependency evaluation are not necessarily interchangeable. States and agencies use different terminology and may have different provider requirements.

If you are not sure what type of evaluation was requested, review our Colorado drug and alcohol evaluation guide or call before scheduling.

Can an Old DUI From Another State Affect Your Colorado Driver's License?

Potentially, yes. Moving to Colorado does not necessarily make an unresolved driver's license problem in another state disappear.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration operates the National Driver Register, which includes the Problem Driver Pointer System. According to NHTSA, the system contains information about people whose driving privileges have been revoked, suspended, canceled, or denied, as well as certain serious traffic-related offenses.

Rather than acting as a complete national driving record, the system can point the state checking your status to the state where the relevant driver-status information is maintained. NHTSA explains that a person reported through the system may be unable to obtain a license or learner's permit until the reason for the record has been resolved with the reporting state.

That helps explain why someone living in Colorado today can still encounter a licensing problem connected to an event that happened years ago somewhere else.

An out of state DUI evaluation may be one requirement involved in resolving that situation, but it is not automatically the only requirement.

Why Colorado May Require You to Resolve the Other State First

Colorado's driver-license rules address restraints imposed by other states. The practical issue for many new Colorado residents is that the state connected to the original suspension, revocation, or other restraint may need to update or clear its record before the Colorado licensing process can move forward.

That does not mean every out-of-state DUI case follows the same path. It means the original state remains important even after you establish residency in Colorado.

If that state tells you that an out of state DUI evaluation may be completed where you currently reside, the next question is whether it has specific rules about the evaluator's credentials, assessment format, required forms, testing, treatment recommendations, or report submission.

Colorado Assessments does not determine another state's DMV or court requirements and cannot guarantee that another jurisdiction will accept a report. What we can do is review the evaluation requirement you were given and determine whether the requested clinical service appears to fall within our scope.

5 Critical Steps Before Scheduling an Out of State DUI Evaluation

Taking these steps before scheduling an out of state DUI evaluation can reduce confusion and help avoid paying for an assessment that does not match the requesting agency's instructions.

1

Identify the State or Agency Requesting Documentation

Determine whether the requirement comes from a state DMV, court, probation department, attorney, treatment authority, licensing agency, or another source. The requesting organization matters because each may use different standards.

2

Get the Current Requirements in Writing

Ask for a letter, form, email, reinstatement checklist, provider requirement, or other written instructions. Requirements can change, and information remembered from an old case may no longer describe what the agency needs today.

3

Find Out Exactly What Type of Evaluation Is Required

Look for the agency's actual terminology. It may request a substance use evaluation, alcohol assessment, drug and alcohol evaluation, DUI evaluation, chemical dependency evaluation, treatment assessment, or another specifically defined service.

4

Verify Provider and Report Requirements

Before completing the out of state DUI evaluation, determine whether the requesting party specifies a provider license, addiction credential, state approval, particular form, number of sessions, testing requirement, treatment program, or submission procedure.

5

Send the Requirements Before You Schedule

If you are unsure whether Colorado Assessments fits the request, call or text with the state, agency, deadline, and documentation you received. We can help determine whether your requested evaluation appears consistent with the services offered.

What Documents Should You Gather for an Out of State DUI Evaluation?

The exact documents needed for an out of state DUI evaluation depend on the referral and the scope of the assessment. If available, gather the information that explains why the evaluation is being requested and what the receiving agency expects.

  • DMV or driver-license reinstatement letter
  • Court order or case-related instructions
  • Probation requirements
  • Attorney instructions
  • Required evaluation form or questionnaire
  • Provider credential requirements
  • Prior evaluation or treatment documentation, when relevant
  • Alcohol or drug testing records, when relevant
  • Deadline for completing or submitting the report
  • Instructions explaining where the report must be sent

Providing the requirements early can also help determine the appropriate evaluation scope. You can review current Colorado Assessments services and pricing before scheduling.

Have a Letter From Another State?

You do not need to translate the requirement yourself. Call or text with the state, requesting agency, deadline, and paperwork you received so we can discuss whether the requested evaluation appears to fit our services.

What If You Don't Know Which State Is Holding Up Your License?

If you have been told there is an out-of-state problem but do not understand where it comes from, start with the licensing authority rather than scheduling an evaluation immediately.

NHTSA explains that the Problem Driver Pointer System identifies the state where relevant driver-status information is maintained. Individuals can also request information about their own PDPS status through the National Driver Register.

Once you identify the state of record, contact that state's licensing authority and ask what remains outstanding. If an out of state DUI evaluation is part of that requirement, ask whether the evaluation can be completed by a provider in Colorado and what qualifications or forms the state requires.

This sequence matters. An assessment provider can complete clinical evaluation services, but the provider does not determine your driver's license eligibility or remove a state licensing restraint.

Can You Complete an Out of State DUI Evaluation in Colorado?

In some circumstances, yes. People who now live in Colorado may be permitted to use a local qualified provider for an out of state DUI evaluation. Whether that is allowed depends on the state and organization requesting the assessment.

Some agencies provide broad instructions. Others specify evaluator credentials, forms, testing, education, treatment, or approved-provider rules. That is why we strongly recommend confirming the requirements before the first appointment.

Colorado Assessments offers structured drug, alcohol, and substance use evaluations with professional written documentation. In-person appointments are available in Englewood, and Colorado telehealth may be available when clinically appropriate and compatible with the requesting party's requirements.

Out of State DUI Evaluation FAQs

These are some of the most common questions Colorado residents may have when an older DUI or DWI from another state becomes part of a current driver's license or documentation issue.

Can I get a DUI evaluation in Colorado for a DUI that happened in another state?

Possibly. Another state or requesting agency may permit an evaluation to be completed by a qualified provider where you currently live. Before scheduling an out of state DUI evaluation, confirm the agency's current provider, assessment, form, and report requirements.

I moved to Colorado and another state has a hold on my license. What should I do first?

Identify the state or agency responsible for the unresolved status and obtain its current reinstatement instructions. If an evaluation is required, ask exactly what type of assessment is needed and whether a Colorado-based provider can complete it.

Will another state accept an out of state DUI evaluation completed in Colorado?

Acceptance depends on the state or organization requesting the report. Colorado Assessments cannot guarantee acceptance by another DMV, court, probation department, attorney, or agency. Written requirements should be reviewed before scheduling whenever possible.

What should I send Colorado Assessments before scheduling?

Send or describe the state involved, the requesting agency, your deadline, and any letter, form, court instruction, DMV notice, provider requirement, or other documentation explaining what is needed.

Can Colorado Assessments remove a DMV hold or reinstate my driver's license?

No. Colorado Assessments provides clinical substance use evaluations and written reports. Driver's license eligibility, reinstatement, clearance, and acceptance decisions are made by the responsible licensing or requesting authority.

Can an old DUI still create a licensing problem years later?

It can. NHTSA explains that driver records reported through the National Driver Register may remain relevant until the underlying issue is resolved according to the reporting state's requirements. Contact the state of record for the requirements applicable to your particular situation.
